We are getting so good at saying "hello" in Czech that waitresses think we are Czech and start speaking to us in fast Czech. But then we disappoint them, we think, when we look at them with confused stares...
After we blogged yesterday our day got a little bit worse. We decided not to go to the Mexican restaurant, and instead shop at the grocery store downtown to get a good "american" meal for us to cook at the hostel. Our plan was BBQ tofu and vegetables. Guess what...the don't have BBQ sauce in the CR! Nor do they have cooking spray for the skillet. I guess they just use straight oil for frying. So, instead of BBQ we settled for ramen noodles, vegetables, and tofu. We went back to the hostel and tried to cook the food in the skillet (which was nothing more than a camping skillet nearly as thin as a piece of cardboard). Unfortunately, we also didn't know how to use the stove since there were no markings on it like (hot, low, med) so we guessed. Unfortuantely we guessed wrong and burned the pans and the tofu. Some of the pan was burnt on to the tofu which made our meal taste like chemicals and Jess' suite smell like diapers. People would walk past Jess' suite and say "Yuck! What is that smell!?" Fortunately Jess' suitemates thought the incident was funny and the smell cleared out quickly (with the help from the new fan). So our dinner did not turn out as planned (we ended up eating peanut butter crackers and cliff bars).
Today turned out much better, but not without its follies. We had class this morning followed by planning for our day. We made plans to meet up with our friend Ken at the Cubist Museum after we ate at a vegetarian buffet called "Country Life". The buffet was great, but the Cubist museum ended up being closed. We waited for our friend Ken to show up, but he never did likely having gotten lost in Prague's endless series of intertwining streets. We waited for forty five minutes and then decided to browse some of the shops in "old town".

After some shopping we went to a cute cafe that serves coffee and treats. It was one of the first places since we've been here that we felt at home. Perhaps it was the Miles Davis songs playing in the background. The cafe is located in a tiny square called "Tyn" which has become our favorite area in Old Town, housing, Anagram Books (good bookstore), Botanicus (nice soaps and things), Bric a Brac (antique trinkets), and Beas (a good vegetarian Indian restaurant).

Today was a much calmer day and although it did rain a bit today, we were prepared with rain jackets and umbrellas. We might add here that the weather here in Prague is CrAZy. It will be dark and cloudy one moment, rain, and then be sunny like a perfect day. The temperature is also very inconsistent. One day it will be 80 + degrees and then we'll have a day like today which is windy and cold (about 60 degrees). (Note to mom and Jodi: pack clothes for all kinds of weather conditions, except maybe snow - cross fingers!)
Tonight we will be going to a place called "cowboys" for some eats and drinks. It has a beautiful view of the Prague Castle and a giant rotating plaster cow (only in Prague!)...should be nice/funny!
Love,
jess + zach
p.s. A little "Engrish" for you...
What?
and...
What?
and for Jess' brother we found a tasty treat named after him...

Chocolate, cheese, and coffee-major food groups! The CR must have a different food pyramid. Today Louisville imitated Prague in that we got heavy rain about midnight, then sunshine this morning, then rain, then sunshine. It is now about 11:30 PM on Thursday and everything is clear. By the way, Mom is in discussions with her brother Charlie about trading weekends in Union. Instead of a weekend in October, we would go to Union the weekend of August 4 & 5. Our welcoming celebration may have to wait a day or so! I can't beleive that over a week has already passed and that there is just 4 weeks left. Mom is getting excited about her departure on Tuesday, and her eventual trip to Prague to meet up with you. Have you checked out the blog that Jodi set up for their trip? Maybe I will do a blog on my adventures in Louisville!!--NOT. When will the pol sci class end and the art history class start or do they run at the same time? How is the book working out? Is there anything that you forgot that you want Mom to bring? Take care and will write more in the days to come. Mom and Dad
I think a blog about your time in Louisville is a great idea!
The book is working out great. I have the most updated version which is great when it comes to international relations (i.e. it has info about the most recent wars, such as Iraq/terrorism) I might start thinking about things I want Mom to bring, although I don't want her to have to carry any extra weight. It might be better to welcome me anyways on the 6th rather than the 4th or 5th as I will be incredibly "out of it" from jet lag. I am still trying to get used to the time change here. Love you guys! - jess
Hooray! A snack named after me! I think bears playing hockey are delicious! Yummy! I am so excited. This is the best news of the day. I can not wait to tell PugPuggy. If you could find a snack named "PugPuggy" and "Megan", that would be awesome, too. I loved the blog! Keep them coming. It makes my work day go by so quicker!
BEAR DOWN ARIZONA ICECATS!! Ben, you could set up a company with your in-laws and sell these snacks at the concession stand in AZ. What a deal. Then you could retire in a couple of years from the profits, buy a large home on the beach with adjacent quarters for Mom and I, and we could just sit around and do nothing. It's OK the medication will kick in soon! Take care. Dad
