Only In Prague...

The past two days have been cloudy and cool. The weather is a lot like fall-time. We feel like we should be carving pumpkins and dressing up in fun costumes.

Yesterday was "kid day" in Prague. It was a holiday, and parents took their kids on the subways downtown or to the zoo to "bond" and have fun. The whole city was filled with tons and tons of tiny ones.

Yesterday we had the day off from class. We both slept in and got some needed rest. We decided to go to Beas (on our favorite street, Tyn) which is a vegetarian Indian restaurant. It was delicious and cheap. Beas is the only place in Prague we know of and have visited which serves free tap water. The food bills here can sometimes be expensive, not because the dishes themselves are expensive, but beacuse you always have to pay for bottled water. Sometimes coke and juice are cheaper than water. Although the tap water here is safe to drink and tastes just fine (in our opinion) no one here drinks or serves tap water. We might also note here that water in most of the places we have been here comes in glass containers (as does coke, beer, etc.). We have a theory that most of the people that live here are dehydrated because the water is so expensive you don't want to drink a lot. We both suffered from dehydration when we first arrived but have solved the problem by buying cheap plastic bottled water we found at the grocery down the street from our hostel.

After Beas we did some postcard shopping and attempted to visit the Communist Museum. The museum is ironically located to the right of a McDonalds and to the left of a Casino (only in Prague!). We were interested in the museum but after we found out it would be fifteen dollars with a student ID we decided we'd rather spend our monies on ice cream. (communist museum)

( we pass this everyday but we forget to post the picture)

We walked around the neighborhood and ran into what we thought was a car, but ended up being a piece of art designed to look like a car. Only in Prague!

Later last night we went out with Jess' suitemates and Zach's roomate to Letna park which is located across the street (relatively) from our hostel. There is a beautiful view of the entire city from a top the park. We sat on the platform overlooking the city, watched the sun set, and ate some snacks from the neighborhood mini-mart. It was quite lovely!(the view from Letna)
After dark we went out with our friends Jenny (jess' suitemate) and Nate (zach's roomate) to see some of the sights that can only be seen in Prague.

We saw a giant shoe:

And a pig jumping off a diving board:

(don't jump!)

We also went to a Harley themed bar where the DJ was spinning 80's hits. We laughed at the Czechs who dance just as bad as us.

We all kind of felt like we were walking into 1986 (although none of us were really old enough in 86 to actually remember what it was like:)

Today we decided to go see the gigantic TV tower which is considered one of the greatest eyesores of Prague (according to the residents). We would have to absolutely agree. This was another landmark that is "only in Prague". Basically, it has very little function or purpose. It is a huge waste of space. The tower was built during the Communist era. It consists of two floors. One is a viewing floor and the other is a restaurant that no one really goes to. Going up the tower are gigantic babies with barcodes on their faces. They look like alien babies, and supposedly they move, but we didn't see how. We were generally creeped out by the babies, and the run-down area around the tower. But we had to see it, for it can only be seen in Prague.
We went to another vegetarian restaurant for lunch. We have really had no problem staying vegetarian on this trip. Tonight we are going to hang out with Jenny and Nate again, probably trying to find more things of bizzare nature that seem natural to Prague.

Aaaaaaa! Bar-coded babies defying gravity!!! See what Communism does?! I want to go back in history and change Ronald Regan's famous speech from "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall" to "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall & that creepy bar-code baby tower".

Actually, when Jess was little, she often defied gravity. But we rarely let her climb towers. She would jump from the coffee table to the couch, yelling, "Shiney Green Suit" while we video taped. We should have bar-coded her. Oh well, too late.
